The salvation of this human world lies nowhere else than in the human heart, in the human power to reflect, in human modesty, and in human responsibility. Without a global revolution in the sphere of human consciousness nothing will change for the better. If you look to others for
fulfillment, you will never truly be fulfilled. If your
happiness depends on money, you will never be happy with
yourself. Be content with what you have; rejoice in
the way things are. When you realize there is nothing
lacking, the whole world belongs to you.
The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive. Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. Faith is the strength by which a
shattered world shall emerge into the
light. Life is not the way it's supposed
to be. It's the way it is. The way you cope with it is what
makes the difference. If you wait for the perfect moment when all is safe and assured, it may never arrive. Mountains will not be climbed, races won, or lasting happiness achieved. If you first put your spiritual
life in order, everything else falls into place. Then your
emotional and material life must - sooner or later - support
your spiritual choices. In other words, if you spend less
time worrying about the everyday details and commit more
time to unleashing your spiritual potential, then the
solutions to your everyday problems will naturally emerge as
flashes of intuition or realization. When faced with demanding
situations, can you keep your heart as light as a feather?
Can you laugh your way through challenges and maintain an
attitude freer than fear? When confronted with upsets and
the poisonous projections of others, can you remember that
all is well? Do you know that you are a spiritual being, not
subject to the whims and caprices of earthly tides? Your friends will know you better in the first minute you meet than your acquaintances will know you in a thousand years. I slept and dreamt that life was
joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and
behold, service was joy. For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin--real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. Treat every person with kindness and respect, even those who are rude to you. Remember that you show compassion to others not because of who they are, but because of who you are. If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation. The most important choice we make
every day is whether we'll be happy or disgruntled about the
life we live. Whatever we do, we always have that choice.
Even the person working for a minimum wage at some fast food
place has a choice about whether to enjoy her work and treat
customers with a smile and a joyful presentation, or to be
grumpy and begrudge every moment. While the low paying job
is a fact, the attitude we choose is variable. Essence of compassion: Resolve to
be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged,
sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant with the weak
and wrong... because sometimes in our lives we will have
been all of these. We are in a school for gods,
wherein in slow motion we learn the consequences of thought.
The world is dangerous not because of those who do harm, but because of those who look at it without doing anything. You can no more win a war than you
can win an earthquake. The essence of all religions is love, compassion, and tolerance. Kindness is my true religion. The clear proof of a person's love of God is if that person genuinely shows love to fellow human beings. Humanity has advanced, when it has advanced, not because it has been sober, responsible, and cautious, but because it has been playful, rebellious, and immature. I never give them hell, I just tell
the truth and they think it's hell.
Only in the last moment in history has the delusion arisen that people can flourish apart from the rest of the living world. Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man. You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. We do not really think, we are barely conscious, until something goes wrong. Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside of us while we live. It is not the easy or convenient life for which I search...but life lived to the edge of all my possibility. Worry is like a rocking chair. It
gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere.
A man can be destroyed, but not
defeated. This is courage
to bear
unflinchingly what heaven sends.
I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love. Never think that God's delays are
God's denials. Hold on, Hold fast, Hold out. Patience is
genius. Laughter is the shortest distance
between two people. A single grateful thought raised to
heaven is the most perfect
prayer. We must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means. The fountain of content must spring up in the mind, and he who hath so little knowledge of human nature as to seek happiness by changing anything but his own disposition, will waste his life in fruitless efforts and multiply the grief he proposes to remove. I must respect the opinions of others even if I disagree with them. To err is human; to forgive, divine. To him who has had the experience, no explanation is necessary. To him who has not had the the experience, no explanation is possible. Those who bring sunshine to the
lives of others cannot keep it from
themselves. I feel an earnest and humble
desire, and shall till I die, to increase the stock of
harmless cheerfulness. What we frankly give, forever is
our own. It is more blessed to give than to
receive. Prayer carries us half way to God, fasting brings us to the door of His palace, and alms-giving procures us admission. What is hateful to you, do not to
your fellowmen. That is the entire Law; all the rest is
commentary. Do not unto another that you would hot have him do unto you. Thou needest this law alone. It is the foundation of all the rest. Most people don't know that there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don't get too comfortable and fall asleep and miss your life. The wind and the waves are always
on the side of the ablest navigators.
If you haven't got any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble. Under all speech that is good for
anything there lies a silence that is better. Silence is
deep as Eternity; speech is shallow as Time.
Sex is a flame which uncontrolled
may scorch; properly guided, it will light the torch of
eternity. There is a Law that man should love
his neighbor as himself. In a few years it should be as
natural to mankind as breathing or the upright gait; but if
he does not learn it he must perish.
I hold it true, whate'er befall; I
feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and
lost Than never to have loved at all.
The most thoroughly wasted of all
days is that on which one has not laughed.
Cheerfulness in most cheerful people, is the rich and satisfying result of strenuous discipline. If I had no sense of humor, I would long ago have committed suicide. The secret of contentment is
knowing how to enjoy what you have, and to be able to lose
all desire for things beyond your
reach. Defeat is not the worst of
failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.
Once during Prohibition I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water. Complete abstinence is easier than perfect moderation. Our grand business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand. Every charitable act is a stepping
stone towards heaven. As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled. Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation. There is nothing permanent except change. Good actions ennoble us, and we are the sons of our own deeds. What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say. Action to be effective must be directed to clearly conceived ends. The actions of men are the best
interpreters of their thoughts.
I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it,-but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor. We must make the best of those ills which cannot be avoided. The weather-cock on the church spire, though made of iron, would soon be broken by the storm-wind if it … did not understand the noble art of turning to every wind. Adventure is not outside a man; it is within. Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune; but great minds rise above them. Anger blows out the lamp of the mind. Anger and intolerance are the twin enemies of correct understanding. If you have a point to make, don't
try and be clever or subtle about it. Hit the nail on the
head. Then hit it again. And again.
Aim for the sky, you'll hit the
mountain. Aim for the mountain, you'll hit the dust beneath.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. We all desire to be kind and compassionate, but it's easy to allow the challenges of everyday life to throw us off track. To get back into alignment, ask yourself: "Am I kinder today than I was a year ago?" “Do I treat people as if they were precious or problematic?” Just for today, vow to act kindly toward everyone with whom you come in contact, and then try to make your experiment a daily habit. When you are filled with joy every waking moment, you are then most fully connected to your soul. And from that state of joy and bliss, any action you take, or any thought you think, will ripple out to the entire planet and positively influence all who are open to it. And even those who are not. In fact, that is your very reason for being: to experience joy in every waking moment. To be fully connected to your soul, to your source. In that state, you are flowing the energy of the Universe through your physical body in a way that must, inevitably, touch those around you, often in the most profound way.No one, no matter how spiritually awake or asleep he/she may be, can remain unaffected by such powerful energy as that you radiate when you are in a state of joy. That is, when you are fully connected to your soul, when you are fully who you really are. So when you wonder what your purpose in life is, or what your work is, consider this: No matter what else you may choose to do with your life, if in all, or most, of your waking moments, you are experiencing joy, then you have fulfilled your reason for coming to this lifetime. And you are making a HUGE and positive difference to the planet and all living creatures upon it. How's your inner garden? Have the weeds been allowed to overgrow and choke out the rose? Is the stress in your life such that you have not taken time to breathe and smell the rose, let alone nurture it and devote yourself to its emergence? What is the status of the crop you're raising? Does it look like the harvest will be one that you will enjoy? Are you breaking your back to cultivate money and position, when a crop of love and joy would bring you more happiness? O Lord that lends me life, Lend me a heart replete with thankfulness! Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart. When we surrender to God, we let go of our attachment to how things happen on the outside, and we become more concerned with what happens on the inside. Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. Realize that now, in this moment of time, you are creating. You are creating your next moment. That is what's real. -- Sara Paddison The winds of grace are always blowing, but you have to raise the sail. If we choose to believe that we're responsible for our experiences, the good and the so-called bad, then we have the opportunity to outgrow the effects of the past. We can change. We can be free. A person is buffeted by circumstances so long as he believes himself to be the creature of outside conditions. -- James Allen One who has learned to love all people will find plenty of people who will return that love. The longest journey is the journey inward, for he who has chosen his destiny has started upon his quest for the source of his being. Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has many-not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some. Take your life in your own hands, and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame. People say "I want peace," "I want freedom." And? The only way to have freedom or peace is to create them in our own heart. How to do this? First of all through awareness that you can and secondly through constant practice. Both poverty and riches are the offspring of thought. Make me sweet again, Fragrant and fresh and wild, And thankful for any small event. Recognize joy when it arrives in the plain brown wrappings of everyday life. -Judith Viorst There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving and that's your own self. Everything I need shall be provided today. Everything.” Say it, until you believe it. Say it at the beginning of the day. Say it throughout the day. Sometimes, it helps to know what we want and need. But if we don't, we can trust that God does. When we ask, trust, and believe that our needs will be met, our needs will be met. Sometimes God cares about the silliest little things, if we do. Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary. You'll encounter many obstacles along the road to living your dreams. Some obstacles may be real, some imagined, some may be tangible, and some may be intangible. Some of those obstacles will be created by others, and some will be self-imposed. However they manifest, you will always be given the choice as to whether you give them power. God has made many doors opening into the truth which he opens to all who knock upon them with hands of faith. Remember that happiness is a way of travel, not a destination. Run forward when possible, walk ahead when you can, stagger onward when you must, but never cease your forward movement. You create your thoughts. Your thoughts create your intentions. Your intentions create your reality. This being human is a guest house. Every morning is a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor...Welcome and entertain them all. Treat each guest honorably. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond. Don’t let what you are being get in the way of what you might become. Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world. Man is equally incapable of seeing the nothingness from which he emerges and the infinity in which he is engulfed. If I hadn’t believed it, I wouldn’t have seen it with my own eyes. We turn to God for help when our foundations are shaking only to learn that it is God shaking them. You cannot take the life of your times further than you have taken yourself. All great truths begin as blasphemies. And here are some of my favorite predictions: Airplanes are interesting toys, but of no military value. -Marshall Foch, WWI French Commander, 1911 Everything that can be invented has been invented. -Charles Duell, US commissioner of Patents, 1899 Computers in the future may only weigh 1.5 tons. -Popular Mechanics, 1949 Last words of Union General John Sedgwick: “The rebel artillery couldn’t hit an elephant at this dist...” |
